Blickling Hall, near Aylsham, Norfolk

Blickling Hall is a magnificent Jacobean House just outside the market town of Aylsham. The hall is perhaps most famously known for being the residence of Anne Boleyn, the unfortunate second wife of King Henry VIII. She was beheaded on charges of adultery, incest and treason on 19 May 1536, although widely assumed to be innocent. The current Blickling Hall (dates from the early seventeenth century) was built on the ruins of the old Boleyn property in the reign of James I, by the Hobarts.

The Mausoleum at Blickling ParkDelightful gardens and parkland surround the house with many good walks, ranging from a short stroll around the lake to longer rambles, including woodland routes through the 4,777 acre estate. There is a formal woodland wilderness garden with daffodils, bluebells, azaleas and rhododendrons, a secret garden, a dry moat with scented plants and a Victorian parterre garden with herbaceous borders.

Blickling Hall has certainly had a colourful, sometimes turbulent, past with a fascinating array of important owners and visitors all making for a thoroughly interesting history, and a most enjoyable visit. Visit the National Trust website for further information.
